Tanzania Porridge Program
Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Tanzania Porridge Program to date. Due to the pandemic and the Virginia Stay at Home Order through June 10, we are far short of our goal of feeding 315 malnourished students. Therefore, the vestry has approved extending this fundraiser through Labor Day.
The pandemic is just beginning to emerge in Tanzania. The government announced that schools will remain closed until further notice. Alice, the headmistress of the St. Augustine's Primary School, hopes they will open early May. All of the students we support through the porridge program rely on the school for food. We want to be able to provide porridge for 315 students at $26 each for a total of $8,190.
We invite you, as you are able, to support this important mission even during this strange times. Visit our giving page to see options for donating electronically.
Comfort Cases Packing Party Postponed
Due to the pandemic and the Virginia Stay at Home Order through June 10, we are postponing our Comfort Cases packing party until the fall. When we are able to gather and assemble backpacks again we will schedule the party. Comfort Cases is not accepting donations at this time, so we will continue to hold on to any items received until the packing party.
Until then, watch for sales and stock up so we can make the 2020 packing party the biggest one yet!

2020 Salt and Light Grant Applications
The Holy Cross Endowment Fund Committee is now accepting applications for 2020 Salt & Light grants. These grants fund outreach projects led by parishioners or their immediate family members and are awarded annually as income is available from the Endowment Fund. This is an opportunity to launch a special outreach project at Holy Cross or to extend or deepen an existing outreach ministry.
This year we have up to $8,900 in funds to award. The deadline for the first step of the application process is May 15. Complete guidelines can be found at the link below. A second call for applications may be considered for later this year depending on the responses received by May 15.
Questions can be sent to email@example.com.
At Holy Cross, we seek to be Christ's hands and feet in the world, serving those in need in our community and around the world. We do this by partnering with established programs that are engaged in improving the lives of those in need and giving hope to anyone seeking a better life. There are many ways to make a difference in the world.
You are welcome to join us in any of the programs listed here.
We collect shelf stable food items for the Committee for Helping Others' food pantry, which serve food insecure families in our immediate surroundings. Donations are delivered to CHO on a weekly basis.
Personal Care Items
Parishioners donate shampoo, soap, and other personal care items that are delivered to the Lamb Center, a day shelter in Fairfax County.
Parish Lunch Line
The third Sunday of every month we gather in the parish kitchen to make sandwiches for clients of Northern Virginia Family Service’s Bailey’s Crossroads shelter. After our 10:30 a.m. service, we work for about 45 minutes to assemble and package sandwiches with the supplies we have on hand. All are welcome to come help out for as much time as you can spare. We are always accepting donations of lunch meat, cheese, and bread.
About one Saturday a month, we gather for a day of creative expression and service to others. During Art-n-Soul, participants create paintings that are donated to Pathways to Housing DC as house-warming gifts for their clients. Art-n-Soul is open to anyone age 7 and up, regardless of previous painting experience. You will be guided through the process of creating original work. Experienced painters are available to help those who need it. A suggested donation of $25 covers the cost of materials and lunch.
We hold packing parties twice a year to provide much-needed supplies and a sense of dignity to kids in the foster system.
United Thank Offering
Parishioners drop coins in their blue boxes as they count their blessings twice a year. The funds are gathered and donated to UTO, which provides grants to groups seeking to serve the world.
During Lent, parishioners are invited to sponsor a student who is suffering from malnutrition, by paying for daily breakfast at St. Augustine's Primary School in Dar es Salam, Tanzania.
In November, parishioners pick up grocery bags and shopping lists to purchase Thanksgiving groceries for struggling families served by Second Story.
During Advent, we collect Christmas presents to be donated to CHO, which makes them available to their clients free of charge. Struggling families can choose gifts for their children at the Christmas store in mid-December.
