The Committee for Helping Others (CHO)
The Committee for Helping Others (CHO) was organized in 1969 to provide simple, loving charity for the needy of Vienna, Oakton, Dunn Loring and Merrifield.
Holy Cross began partnering with CHO in the mid 90’s when a parishioner who volunteered in their Food Closet started the Red Wagon ministry at Holy Cross. The red wagon has been a fixture in our church for 25 years, collecting non-perishable food items and household supplies to help keep CHO’s shelves stocked. Last year, CHO served 707 families/2,741 people with food.
During the Pandemic, the Food Closet had to adapt in order to protect volunteers and clients. Food distribution was limited, and from March 13 – July 1 they handled all food calls with gift cards only. Holy Cross held a Giving Parade in July 2020 and January/February 2021, which benefitted CHO. We also supported CHO’s alternative drive-thru Christmas Store, providing many gift cards and food cards. The Food Closet has been up and running thanks to community support but there are always needed items.
Current Food Closet needs are:
2lb. bags white rice
med. size laundry detergent
diapers size 6
